South of Puerto Viejo begins the 19000 acre of protected area of the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Reserve. The reserve contains secondary forests, swamps, old cacao plantations and some of the last primary coastal rainforest of the Southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. The reserve is home to over 380 species of birds, many mammals like monkeys, sloth and armadillos and reptilians like caimans, turtles and crocodiles. In the vicinity of the small community Gandoca you can observe the giant Leatherback turtle depositing their eggs (May to July).
